“I tell my patients, ‘Do what you’re able to, but if we can get good grass-fed meats, pasture-raised eggs, wild-caught fish,'” Holmquist outlined. “So that we get the most nutrients out of those animals.”

But if such items are not in your budget, or you don’t have time to look for them, she recommends buying the protein most easy to obtain. Canned beans are considered a good complementary option. And there is affordable peanut butter made from healthy ingredients. Holmquest emphasized it is not about being perfect with your diet, but instead focusing on consistency.

Certified organic 2024 – Changes ahead

CHICAGO — Much has changed in the US organic food and beverage sector since the US Department of Agriculture National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2000. And 2024 will bring more changes, everything from stricter regulations to a growing demand for imports.

To ensure organic remains a reliable certification for shoppers, NOP issued its Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) rule that went into effect on March 20, 2023. Operations and certifiers must fully comply with the rule by March 19, 2024.

The SOE closes loopholes that have enabled ingredients that do not meet NOP standards to enter the organic supply chain, leading to fraud. Key updates include requiring certification of more of the businesses at critical links in organic supply chains.

United States military cargo planes have air-dropped food into Gaza, in the first of a series of aid drops as humanitarian groups criticize Israel for blocking access to the besieged and bombarded strip.

A health group on Wednesday raised concern over the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults in the country.

This as the Healthy Philippines Alliance (HPA), a network of civil society organizations advocating for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), urges the government to help make healthier food accessible to Filipinos, in line with the commemoration of World Obesity Day .

The HPA stated that poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity contribute to overweight and obesity, elevating the likelihood of developing NCDs such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. Moreover, obesity established during childhood can endure into adulthood.

“Consuming an excessive amount of any food is detrimental to your health, leading to an increase in calorie intake and subsequent weight gain. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of the calories required based on height and level of physical activity for adults and based on age for children,” Jennina Duatin, a Registered Nutritionist Dietician who serves as Board of Trustee of Diabetes Philippines, an HPA member, said.

“Furthermore, maintaining a well-balanced diet involves consuming appropriate portion sizes of macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein, and fats tailored to individual daily calorie needs,” Duatin
