Don’t fall for unhealthy filler ingredients and substitutes in these favorite foods that can be deceptive

CHANHASSEN, Minn., March 62024 /PRNewswire/ — The landscape of food is complex – and it’s only getting worse. Ensuring you’re buying genuine, healthy ingredients is increasingly challenging because of misleading labels on products that mask bad items in otherwise healthy-looking choices at the grocery store.

To help everyone recognize the good from the bad, Life Time (NYSE: LTH), offers five “healthy” food favorites that can sneakily hide harmful fillers and cheap, unhealthy substitutes.

Healthy food access boosts outcomes in two studies

In Stockton, California, almost 60% of the city’s 320,000 residents are prediabetic or living with diabetes. Shane Bailey, a 72-year-old longtime resident and US Coast Guard veteran, is one of them. And because she lives in a neighborhood that is considered a food desert because it lacks nearby grocery stores, it can be a huge challenge to access healthy, affordable food.

“I live in the Central Valley with a lot of produce being grown. But in Stockton, it’s often either very expensive, or low quality, or both,” said Bailey.

However, thanks to Abbott and the Public Health Institute’s Healthy Food Rx program, she’s had a boost in making lifestyle changes that help her manage her condition. The program was a pilot study in which 374 patients with diabetes received biweekly healthy meal kits including fresh produce from Emergency Food Bank Stockton/San Joaquin for a year.

“It was fun to learn how to cook these healthy meals. It kept me busy and improved my mental health,” said Bailey. Each box comes with a recipe, and participants can join a virtual cooking class to learn how to make each meal. Her favorite meal was a green veggie stir-fry with chicken —

Strategies for Nutritional Balance During Fasting

As Ramadan approaches in 2024, it is imperative to prioritize healthy food choices during this sacred month of intermittent fasting, particularly as it falls in the summer season. With increased risks of dehydration and related complications, education and adherence to professional advice become crucial for a successful Ramadan.

Incorporating a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet consisting of a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources is essential for maintaining energy levels and overall well-being during Ramadan. Careful meal planning and diverse ingredient incorporation promote physical health, emotional stability, and prolonged satiety throughout the holy month.

Hydration: The Cornerstone of Health

Hydration stands as the foremost consideration during Ramadan to prevent various health issues stemming from dehydration. Limiting consumption of salty, spicy, and fried foods helps avoid thirst while fasting. Opting for caffeine-free fluids and initiating Iftar with water ensures hydration before indulging in other dishes. Overall, increasing fluid intake compensates for fluid losses, primarily through sweat, during the fasting period.

Calorie Control and Healthy Cooking Methods

To avoid weight fluctuations and maintain stable blood sugar levels, it’s crucial to exercise calorie control and opt for healthier cooking methods. Incorporating healthy fats and using cooking techniques such as steaming,
