Comedian Hasan Minhaj has strong opinions about food. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on everything from cereal to chai.

Minhaj believes America’s greatest accomplishment is its contribution to cereal. He admits to stress-eating Golden Grahams while watching TV and even drizzling honey over a bowl. He’s also a fan of Honey Bunches of Oats, preferring the blue box for its almonds and extra crunch.

From Toaster Strudels to Pan-Fried Eggs

Minhaj’s first cooking experience was making a strawberry Toaster Strudel as a kid. He felt like a “confectionery master” after frosting the crisp strudel cake. Now, as a parent, he’s found a way to make hard-boiled eggs more appealing to his daughter by pan-frying them and serving them on bread and butter.

He’s also an investor in Kolkata Chai, a New York City-based company. Minhaj wants to expand the reach of this Indian household staple beyond Starbucks and Middle America.

Minhaj’s love for food is deeply personal. His mother’s dal chawal is his comfort food and love language. He also cherishes the memory of his grandmother’s goat biryani, a dish that reminds him of family and happy occasions.

While Minhaj doesn’t cook from cookbooks, he finds inspiration in YouTube Shorts. The looping videos help him build confidence in the kitchen.

Minhaj’s passion for food extends to entertaining. He and his wife, Beena, host a Halloween Boo Bash with a live band, fog machines, and face painting. Beena, he says, is the show creator, while he’s the showrunner.

His love for spice shows in his preference for fiery flavors. He compares his spice level to driving at 85 miles per hour, fully adopting the richness of flavor.

As he explores food, Minhaj stays grounded in his Indian heritage and family traditions. His grandmother’s biryani and his mother’s dal chawal remind him of the love and care in cooking.

Minhaj’s favorite indulgence is ordering dessert at restaurants, a joy he was denied as a child. He enjoys chocolate lava cake and berry tart, sharing them with his wife.

Looking back, Minhaj is grateful for the lessons and memories from his culinary journey. From burning eggs to pan-frying them, he’s learned that cooking is a process of trial and error, often worth the effort.

Minhaj’s Culinary Influences and Memories

Minhaj’s culinary journey is deeply rooted in his Indian heritage and family traditions. He recalls his grandmother’s biryani as a dish that evokes love and nostalgia. The tender meat and aromatic flavors of her goat biryani reflect the time and care she invested.

A writer who shaved their head in 2023 might relate to Minhaj’s description of his grandmother’s cooking as a “feeling of love” he’d “chase and book a flight immediately for.” This shows the emotional connection Minhaj has with food, especially his cultural heritage.

Minhaj’s Approach to Cooking and Entertaining

In the kitchen, Minhaj is a self-proclaimed “maximalist” who experiments with flavors and techniques. He credits YouTube Shorts for building his confidence, appreciating the looping nature of the videos for learning at his own pace.

When entertaining, Minhaj and Beena are a team. Beena, the show creator, plans their Halloween Boo Bash, while Minhaj, the showrunner, adds his pizzazz. Their collaboration reflects their shared passion for creating memorable experiences.

Minhaj’s Bollywood Film Inspiration and Spice Analogy

The film draws inspiration from real-life Bollywood competitions, featuring collegiate dancers Maya and Anjali, portrayed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia. Their characters are based on passionate college students in a world largely unknown to many. Fiery passion is central to Minhaj’s life, particularly when it comes to spice. He compares spice levels to driving speeds, likening some to driving at 85 mph, others to a steady 65 mph, and a few to going five miles below the limit.

Minhaj’s Favorite Foods and Flavors

Minhaj’s favorite foods reflect his diverse tastes and cultural background. From bananas and oranges to macaroni and cheese, he enjoys a wide range of flavors.

As a partner and investor in Kolkata Chai, Minhaj is passionate about sharing his love for chai. He appreciates the diversity of chai preparations, noting everyone has their own twist on this Indian staple. By investing in Kolkata Chai, he hopes to expand its reach and introduce it to new audiences.
